Alas, the time has come for MY spotlight album pick. When it came to this decision, I had no clue where to go...after a few days of thinking (rather putting it off and totally not thinking about it), I narrowed it down to either the recent release from The Darkness, and the White Stripes Senior album 'Elephant'. Seeing as Elephant is an older release, I figured I'd get it out of the way and save Permission to Land for another day, so all you Darkness fans will just have to wait ;).

First off, in my opinion there are two kinds of people when it comes to the White Stripes. There are those who appreciate their genius and love them, and those who just don't get it and simply don't like them. Needless to say, I am the first of the two. In an era filled with crappy over-produced wannabe rock albums and bands, 'Elephant' proves as a shimmering light of hope for fans of REAL music. In the liner notes of the album, you will see one of the most daring proclamations of “No computers were used during the writing, recording, mixing, or mastering of this record.". That being said, this is THE best album of 2003, with a raw sound and incredible mix of contrasting yet smoothly transitioned rock, blues and 60/70's rock and pop like songs. From the hounding vocals and backup from the two-piece to the stinging guitar play from Jack White, it's hard not to be utterly amazed by this album.

It starts off strong with the CD's first single, 'Seven Nation Army'. Booming bass and screaming guitar riffs paired with incredibly catchy lyrics that seem to tell the world of the new wave of rock music is being ushered in, it is a perfect opener. Next comes 'Black Math', another favorite of mine. This song showcases their unique (by today’s sad standards) sound perfectly, and opens with a melodic guitar piece, and transitions sweetly into a blistering rip from Jack accompanied with his unmistakable howling vocals. Next on the list comes 'There's No Home For You Here', yet another favorite. Coming off as cool 70's song, the chorus is catchy, and leads into the rock out guitar parts that are simply the shit.

Well, I could go on and on about this album, but I'll try and wrap this up. Favorites of mine not highlighted are: ....the whole damned album! With the exception of 'In The Cold, Cold Night' which has Meg one lead vocals(not to strong, still a solid track IMO), I’m in love with every song. So, a big enthusiastic 5 stars, get off your ass and get the CD if you haven't already! Push play, smoke your smoke, drink you drink, do whatever you do homie, because you'll be in for the album from start to finish.
