Tool: Ænima
This album is Tool's second major record, released in 1996. It's 77 minutes long, and contains 15 tracks, of which 9 are real songs and the other 6 are intermissions / fun tracks.
Although their debut Undertow was already quite successful, Ænima was Tool's masterpiece, and also their 2001 album Lateralus couldn't beat that (IMHO).
It's hard to describe Tool's music, because it's kinda unique. It's rock music, also with some metal riffs, but it's way too complicated to be called heavy metal. Tool don't use the standard verse-refrain-verse-refrain-solo-refrain scheme; for example in the 2nd song Eulogy you have to wait 2 minutes until you hear the guitar for the first time.
Tool know how to build up tension and atmosphere in their songs, the songs grow bigger and bigger until the great final. That's also why most people won't like this CD at first listening. You have to listen to it again and again, to notice all the great details. The musicians are awesome, and above that you hear Maynard James Keenan's voice: sometimes whispering, sometimes singing, sometimes screaming like a maniac. He sings about religious martyrs (Eulogy), fans who accuse the band of sell-out (Hooker With A Penis) and that he wishes for tidal waves which flush away all the crap on earth (Ænema). This title song is also my favourite song on the album, although it's hard to pick out certain songs because they are all great, and have the best "effect" as a whole, if you listen to the album from the 1st till the last minute.
Buy this CD and give it a chance, learn to love it and you won't regret it! |
