I wasn't sure what to expect of this album. With John Nolan leaving and Fred Mascherino coming in to replace his spot in backup vocals, I wasn't sure if the group would have the same "TBS feel" to them. Overall, they still have the same presence that they did before, but sadly, this album falls miles short of Tell All Your Friends. One serious problem with the album is that Adam allows Fred to dominate as lead singer in far too many of the songs, and quite frankly, Fred doesn't even have a fraction of the talent that Adam does. One of the things TBS has always done better than other bands is the way they have their lead vocals and backup vocals singing different lines simultaneously. They still pull this off successfully, but Adam and Fred's voices are too similar. Adam and John's voices were noticably different, and the larger contrast there is in the voice type, the more effective the technique is (i.e. From Autumn To Ashes).
The album starts off with one of the better songs. The beat is really fast, and both singers excel on this track. Skipping ahead to the third track, A Decade Under The Influence, the first single... I'm not a huge fan of this song. I like some of the lyrics, and as the song is about the original band breaking up, it's obviously a very emotional subject to the band, which is why I assume they wanted it to be the first single. This song just doesn't do anything for me though. The first acoustic song from TBS, New American Classic, has a lot of promise. It could have been a great song, but instead of Adam singing lead on this song, Fred does. Because of Fred singing lead, the song comes off as only mediocre opposed to one of the best songs on the album.
Fortunately, the album does pick up towards the end. The last four songs on the album are mainly sung by Adam (maybe that's why they're the best songs?), the lyrics remind me of old TBS, and the melodies are extremely catchy. If the first 2/3 of the album had been more like the last four songs... this CD still wouldn't have been as good as TAYF, but it would have been a lot better than it is now.
Overall, it's not a bad album - hell, I've been listening to it for four or five days straight. But Fred kills the original TBS feel of the first album so long as he sings lead. He does a fine job as backup, and they should keep it that way. Maybe they'll get it right next time. Here's to awaiting the third CD... |
