Straylight Run's self-titled debut album is the first CD that I've felt the need to purchase since Brand New's "Deja Entendu"... because it's just that good. If you have no idea who Straylight Run is, they're the "spin-off" band from Taking Back Sunday, but their music is nothing like TBS: it's extremely melodic, most songs have a piano, and there's no screaming of any sort.

The CD has 11 tracks, 4 re-recorded demo songs, and 7 new songs. The first song on the CD, "The Perfect Ending" is one of the weaker songs, but it's still decent. The next two songs are re-recorded demos. The first, "The Tension and the Terror" came out better than the demo version, but the next song, "Existentialism on Prom Night" is not as good as the demo song was. Existentialism is the first single, and it is still the best song on the CD... but it's lacking a certain something that the demo had. Existentialism is really just a beautiful song. It has amazing lyrics, amazing vocals, an amazing melody... it's just really amazing, and one of the best songs I've heard in a very long time.

My second favorite track on the CD is next, "Another Word for Desperate". This song has a really mellow feel to it and excellent vocals by John as usual. "Mistakes we Knew we were Making" is the third re-recorded song... this song was easily the second best of the demos, but it's terribly over-produced on this CD, and they kind of killed it. It's still great to listen to, but it's miles away from being as good as the demo version was. "Tool Sheds and Hot Tubs" is the first song on the CD where Michelle takes over lead vocals. Her voice is great and it really shows on this track, but the beat is a bit too upbeat, and quite different from the rest of the tracks... it's a decent song, but one of my least favorites. Michelle also does lead vocals on "Now It's Done", which is a great song, and she does a great job on it. Finally, the last song, "Sympathy for the Martyr" has some very good shared vocals between John and Michelle, and this song is also great.

Overall, this album is just absolutely amazing. There are very few flaws, and you can listen to all the songs over and over again. After hearing this CD, I realized why the new Taking Back Sunday CD was nowhere near as good as their debut album: John Nolan is a musical genius, and it shows on Straylight Run's debut CD. 5/5. Get it. Now.
