This is a very different album for Good Charlotte, and many will be happy that their sound has changed. It hasn't changed much, it is a transitional album for them. This means if you didn't already like them, you probably won't now, but if you did like them before, there's a good chance you still will.
The album starts with another tiresome intro track. Honestly, we heard it on The Young & The Hopeless, it was bad enough then and it's even worse now. The first real track on the cd is The Chronicles Of Life And Death. A pleasant surprise in that it shows the growth GC has done as a band right away. The next real stand-out track is the second single, I Just Wanna Live. If you're not turned off by the horrible music video they made for it, it's actually a decent song. It's sort of a response to their hit single Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous. It deals with many issues of fame and money the band now sees from the post Lifestyles era. I Just Wanna Live is immediately followed up by one of the best tracks on the album, Ghost Of You. This is just a great song. Lyrically it's very well written and shows a darkness rarely seen before. The first single, Predictable, is next. Not a good choice for a single to begin with, it's likely a song that represents both where they've come from and where they're going and was then released to regain fan interest without alienating the fanbase into the new sound right away. Without a doubt the most "poppy" track is The World Is Black. The chorus of this song, assuming Joel and Benji sing it without computer help, is an amazing display of vocal range. Just download/buy/ steal the track to see what I mean. It's incredible.
There are actually 2 cds released with separate bonus tracks. Both bonus tracks are generic and mediocre at best. The bonus track seen on both cds, Wounded, is a great song though. Performed by Benji acoustically, the song has a personal feel that is only amplified by the honesty in the lyrics. Much like GC's other acoustic solo song, Emotionless, to get the full effect of this song you need to hear it live.
While this album isn't solid throughout, it shows potential for a great follow-up cd while still offering 5-6 solid songs on its own. It's easy to see how the band has grown on this album, in their lyrics, instrumental parts, and talent as musicians. A great example of this is the diversity of instruments played. Billy plays the keyboard on a number of songs, and Joel picks up the guitar for a few as well. Good Charlotte's strength still lies in their lyrics and melodic vocals/music. Most importantly, they've managed to take themselves in a new direction without betraying the old fashioned Good Charlotte feel. |
