Another week, another review. This week brings a band I have had no experience with, not having even heard of them before Eric so kindly sent me the album. That having been said, here she is.
From Autumn to Ashes is a very...intriguing band. From track to track, I wasn't really sure what to expect. From one to the next, you will come upon a violent blend of death metal like vocals and hard hitting guitar parts, a soft acoustic emo track with sorrow filled vocals, or even a nice somewhat up-beat new metal track with a little bit of both :-P. What I found most interesting, is how they managed to make it come together so seamlessly, and to be frank, so perfectly. By know means do I think this is the greatest band I've ever heard, but they really surprised me how well they blended all these styles over the album, and even each in a single song itself. It starts off with an intimidating track, 'The After Dinner Paycheck', which begins with that death metal (or so what I perceive it to be, not really my cup of tea) sound. But after about the first 30 seconds of the song, it totally switches up to a softer side with great transitional guitar. It really became a favorite from the album the way both the contrasting vocals came together. Next you stumble upon 'Lilacs & Lolitas', which sadly, just kinda mimicked the first track in my opinion. It had the same sort of pace and feel vocally as the first, which is why this track wasn't so memorable to me. Now, with my bleak expectations, they throw curveball with 'No Trivia'. A much lighter track, they really showed to me their range, and obviously this one is a little more accommodating to the average listener. Lyrically the album is strong, which really shines in 'Milligram Smile'. This actually might have been my favorite on the entire album, with the great lyrics accompanied by the same contrasting vocals, and a really cool, though short, dizzying guitar solo about mid way through. In retrospect, that in fact isn't my favorite track, but rather the melo acoustic 'The Fiction We Live'. It was pleasing to hear the band cool down and let the lyrics really take the spotlight, which of course are amazing.
All in all I enjoyed it, but there were just too many tracks that just seemed too similar to one another to stand out on their own. A well deserved 4 out of 5. |
