The first time I heard about Finch was before I went to the Skate and Surf Fest in 2002. I showed my dad the bands playing, and he said, "Finch is playing?" Having never heard of them I replied, "Whatever." Unfortunately I missed my chance to see them at that concert. About a month later, it seemed like every site on the internet was raving about the CD. So I finally gave in and borrowed the CD from my dad. I was blown away. Between May 2002 and May 2003 I listened to Finch's "What It Is To Burn" at least 400 times. I can still listen to it often without skipping one song. What It Is To Burn is my all-time favorite CD. Ever.
It's hard to classify Finch's music into one category. Lots of people call them a blend of nu-metal, emo, screamo, and a bunch of other stuff. Overall, it's just damn amazing. Led by Nate Barcalow's piercing vocals, WIITB has something for everyone. "Letters to You" is more mainstream with a bit of Nate's screaming vocals to spice it up a bit. "Grey Matter" and "Project Mayhem", which has vocals by both Nate and Glassjaw's Darryl, are the hardest songs on the CD. "Ender" is a softer song that really helps to cool things down after the extremely emotional album. Do yourself a favor, if you haven't already heard the Finch CD, listen to the streaming tracks at their site http://www.finchmusic.com/. You won't regret it. |
