More than three years after their full length debut, What It Is To Burn, Finch have finally returned with "Say Hello To Sunshine". As admitted in their interviews, this album will result in the loss of many fans, namely the fans who are expecting WIITB part 2. SHTS could not be more different from WIITB, and I think/hope most people will appreciate the change. If your favorite songs off the old album were "Letters To You", "Post Script", or "Stay With Me", you will most likely not like SHTS, probably because you are 12 years old and have terrible taste in music. As for the rest of us, who have become tired with WIITB's sound... mostly because it has been copied by hundreds of bands, will appreciate Finch's obvious maturity, which is displayed on every track of SHTS. WIITB is still an amazing album, but to create the sequel would have been a terrible mistake.
The album kicks off with one of the best tracks, "Insomniatic Meat". This song really does a great job of setting the tone for Finch's new style, complimented by the extremely dark lyrics. The next song, "Revelation: Song" does a great job of showing off Nate's different vocal styles and is also one of the best songs on the album. In actuality, the album has so many good songs that nearly all the songs are the best. In fact, the only two songs that don't totally blow me away are "Brother Bleed Brother" and "Fireflies". In my opinion, these are the only two subpar songs out of the fourteen, but they do have some good qualities to them as well, and aren't bad songs at all.
Some of the other stand out tracks are "A Man Alone" and "The Casket of Roderic Usher". AMA is my current favorite, but all the songs are so good that it's really hard to pick an actual favorite. The guitar riffs in the song, along with Nate's vocals, are truly amazing. The breakdown and build-up are also incredible. The song is definitely the definition of perfection. "Casket" is the equivalent of "Project Mayhem" from WIITB. Randy, Finch's guitarist, described "Casket" as 'short, brutal, and it'll rip your face clean off', and it does just that. It has a runtime of 1:50, and every second of it is too insane for words.
Overall, Say Hello To Sunshine gets 100 out of 5 stars. Without a doubt, this is the best CD of the millenium. You need to buy this album right now, if you know what's good for you. |
