I wonder who picked this album *cough*. Anyway, yes it was Emerald, the guru of good music, and once again I bow to my knees for him having pointed this band out to me more than over a year ago, which I bet he doesn't even remember =P. "Deja Entendu" is such a great album, but it's that much better having listened to their first album "Your Favorite Weapon". The reason I even bring that up, is because not only were both albums great, but you can actually hear the growth in their music. On "You r Favorite..." the songs were dominated and more focused on the music as oppose to the lyrical content. On "Deja Entendu", it feels very much like their style has grown more sophisticated, with great emotional and heartfelt lyrics that receive more of the spotlight on Jesse's (lead singer) vocals instead of them being more of an after thought behind the ripping guitar as they were on "Your Favorite...". Now folks, be aware that the first time hearing "Deja" all the way through was in a hotel room smoking weed and dropping a couple caps of shrooms, so I’ll try to dull down my weird introspective excitement for this review and be normal. Here we go.
This amazing CD opens with the short and sweet 'Tatou', that sets an eerie mood for what’s to come. Not much to say about this one, but it really does accomplish what it needs to in setting the ambiance for the rest of the album. The next track however is much more interesting. I didn't enjoy this one that much musically (the chorus really kinda killed the mood of the dark lyrical content, but still a great track) as I did the lyrics. If you take the time and just listen, you'll catch such disturbing and genius original lyrical content such as "His stomach turns and he thinks of throwing up but the body on the bed beckons forward and he starts growing up. The fever. The focus. The reasons that I had to believe you weren't to hard to sell"....damn. Sadly the momentum dropped off for me with a somewhat boring song, "I Will Play my Game Beneath the Spin Light". Nothing really stuck with me after hearing the track, so needless to say this is one of my least favorite tracks. But, as expected, they hit you with one of my favorites next, 'I Believe you, But My Tommy Gun Don't'. It starts out rather simple and low-key, but soon takes and gets going. My favorite aspect of this song, is again the lyrics. With almost a smirking arrogance to start off, the bass really kicks in to compliment Jesse's lyrical stylings. Just a damn good song in my opinion. I’m going to go ahead and take the liberty to skip the 1st single, and move on to my favorite song on the album...I’m writing this, so deal with it =). The thing that drew me so into 'The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot' was just how comfortable and familiar it sounded...not to go all crazy hippy on ya, but I just got a crazy cool vibe listening to it, as I did over and over. I’m usually not a guy who's too into the acoustic side of hard hitting nu-metal bands (labels, deal with it!) but I can't help but love it.
Other favorite songs not highlighted include 'Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis' with its haunting simplicity and emotional lyrics, and 'Play Crack the Sky', yet another acoustic track, but the perfect closer to a great album. I don't care what emerald says, 'Play Crack' sounds like CC and he knows it ;). Well there it is...another review, another great CD...go buy it...seriously, now. |
