When I got this CD, I had been listening to their previous album, Your Favorite Weapon, fairly regularly. I was really excited about getting the new album, but when I got it, I didn't really care for it. It was too different from YFW. I was looking for another in Deja. Deja Entendu is French for already heard....which is funny because this CD is nothing like what we've heard from Brand New in the past... Deja Entendu takes Brand New in a completely new direction.
After giving it a few more listen thro's I realized that it being so different from YFW was the best thing they could do. Not to say YFW was bad, its just where they went after is so much better. YFW is an album put together by a young, talented, punk-rooted band with most of the emphasis put on the musical part of the song rather than the lyrical. "Deja Entendu" is a CD full of songs where instead of Jesse Lacey's (the lead singer) voice behind electric and bass guitars his voice becomes the spotlight of the music.
The CD has some slow songs, some fast, and some with both. Don't be distracted by the outrageously long song titles beacause all the songs are amazingly written with all sorts of emothions behind them. Songs about a boy being raped by his girlfriend, or losing a family member, it's like you experience them all. There's something for everyone on this CD. My personal favorite song would be Okay, I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't. Whether you're already a Brand New fan or not, I definitely recommend picking up this album, or at least giving it a good listen.Deja Entendu is French for already heard....which is funny because this CD is nothing like what we've heard from Brand New in the past.
