The group and producer Peter Asher hook up again to follow up their smash 'In My Tribe.' Though Asher and the Maniacs did not always see eye-to-eye, they apparently still could record music together and in this effort, had plenty to say about war (The Big Parade), unwanted pregnancy (Eat For Two), and bigotry (Hateful Hate, and Jubilee*). It is interesting to note that Natalie Merchant penned the lyrics and music for four of the albums songs, possibly preparing herself for an acclaimed solo career. Not a chart burner, the album still shows their growth, and has strong sentiment appreciation from 10,000 Maniacs' fans.
*the liner notes give a footnote to this song -- Lord have mercy on my son
for he is a lunatick, and
sore vexed: for oftimes he
falleth into the fire and
oftimes into the water. |
