Despite the appearance of the word "punk" in their name, OTISPUNK is not really a pop-punk band. In fact, it should be noted that the band members prefer the emphasis to be placed on the word spunk - which is the most appropriate adjective to describe their sound. It's got SPUNK - to say the least!
And while many bands may tout themselves as being unique it is often found upon listening to their material that they sound exactly like whatever band is getting any attention from MTV 2 at the moment. The OTISPUNK sound has so many influences, it is often difficult to discern them all. No one who has heard them can liken them to sounding quite like anyone, except themselves.
While consistently avoiding any tangible, restrictive label, OTISPUNK can best be described as powerful, high energy, melodic and catchy pop/rock - as heard from the 60's through the 80's; Mixed with the bite of old school punk rock (like the Ramones and Bad Religion, and even The Police); Then, you add in sonic nods to 90's and 00's alternative rock bands like Jimmy Eat World, No Doubt and Weezer. Add to THAT mix some of the raw energy of Indie pop, and nods to the worlds of progressive rock and classical music - and that's what OTISPUNK sounds like.
It's probably easier to listen to them, don't you think?
The band is lead by Krista - the band's powerhouse lead singer and guitarist. With her sister Dana playing drums and providing backup vocals, and their "adopted" brother, Zack on bass and backing vocals, this three-piece band has become a force to be reckoned with in the Philadelphia music scene - Their fun, high-energy live shows and the release of their debut full length CD, TRANSLUCENT are undeniable proof of that.
In a city where cover bands have a stranglehold on the bar scene, OTISPUNK is hell-bound and determined to show everyone - at home and abroad - that original bands from Philadelphia can write great songs, and are worth listening to! |
