| Biography |
Known for their unique sound and style the jrock band Dir en grey is very popular in Asia and nowadays also in Europe and USA. The band consists of five members; Kyo the songwriter and the stunning vocalist, Kaoru and Die, both guitar players, Toshiya the bass player and Shinya the drummer.
The band was founded in 1997 when four of the band members of the indieband La:sadie’s, that had disbanded in January the recent year since the bass player Kisaki left the band, decided to start a new band together with the newfound bass player Toshiya. The first album the band released was Missa, a minialbum with six songs reminding about the indiestyle that had been characterized for La:sadie’s.
The former X Japan member Yoshiki produced the first fullength album Gauze that was released in 1998. Significant for Gauze was the special sound that the band had begun to develop. After the release of Gauze they got out on a tour, and touring has been something very important for the band thereafter and each fullength album has been followed by an official tour.
After Gauze came Macabre, released 2000, an album that was darker and a bit heavier than Missa and Gauze. Two years later Kisou was released, an album that had big differences from its predecessors, with a style that was even more unique, and with a heavier sound. 2001 came their next minialbum Six Ugly meanwhile a single from their next fullength album also was released. Six Ugly was, like Kisou, a heavy album with somewhat different lyrics than before, since a criticism against the society was born within them. Kyos criticism against the society could also be noticed in the songs of their next album, which is also their latest; Vulgar that was released in 2003. Vulgar has a dark, suggestive sound and it is obvious that Kyo’s lyrics as well as the bands musical performance have developed since their first album. With Vulgar, Dir en Grey showed that they have succeeded with continuing their rare and unique style of music.
It is obvious that Dir en Grey has something to say to their audience, and all over the world more and more people start to realise that the message that Dir en Grey carries with them is worth listening to. |
